Cost of Studying and Living in the United States

Before you begin studying in the US, you will have to look at tuition and the living costs for your stay. There are numbers of financial options available for international students, so make sure you do some research and find out what you may qualify for.

Both the tuition costs to study in the US and living costs vary considerably between different universities/colleges, educations and cities. Tuition is usually between $5,000 and $50,000 per year. Costs for food and living are normally between $8,000 and $12,000 per year. In addition, to pay tuition, you need money for travelling, course literature, and personal expenses.

We recommend you to do a personal calculation of all the costs to make sure that you have enough in your budget before you arrive in the USA, and begin researching sources of financial aid well in advance.


Once you have decided what to study, you need to consider entry dates, application deadlines, the US student visa deadlines and English language requirement. There are four intakes which are spring, fall, summer, and winter. If you wish to begin your course in January, keep in mind that the application documents well in advance of your cutoff date.

When applying for your visa, you must make sure that you qualify. The U.S. visa requirements are subject to change, but you will generally need I-20 form your chosen university as well as a proof of funds to cover course fees and living expenses.

Please note that you will also have to do an interview with consular officer at the U.S. Embassy for a visa. Another thing to remember is that most courses have their own language requirements, so you may have to show evidence of your languages skills. The preferred English language tests is IELTS, though you will be able to find out more about this from your chosen university. IELTS score of 6.0 or above for undergraduate degrees and 6.5 or above for postgraduate degree is required.
